New Perspective

I found a new perspective in journalism. I didn't realize how much work it was to write a simple story. There are so many different ways to write a story. There are different leads, and different ways. I don't like writing this way I'm better at fictional stories. I never realized how hard it was to interview a person and get the the information back. I have a new respect for journalists.

Story #9

A lot of the students at Anoka-Ramsey Community College are high school students who are going Post Secondary Enrollment Option (PSEO). PSEO is a program where juniors and seniors in high school can take college classes and get credit for them. The cool thing is the government pays for it.

Callie Nicohls is a junior who goes to PACT Charter School and Anoka-Ramsey Community College, she has been at ARCC for two semesters (the fall of 2009 and the spring of 2010). “I have to set aside time to study usually between classes and before work”.

Callie goes to ARCC in the morning but PACT Charter School in the afternoons for math, juggling her schedule is hard but she manages to get her homework done. “Yeah it is challenging mostly depending on what type of teacher you have. It’s kind of just like high school where some teachers let you slide through and some make you work for your grade”. Callie is taking 15 credits at ARCC this semester (three classes), an Algebra two class at PACT Charter School, and she works at GAP.
“I decided to go PSEO so I could get all my classes for high school done and earn college credit I also wanted to start to get classes towards my degree done so I wouldn’t have to pay for as many college classes in the future”.

Callie already has her major picked out, “My major is electrical and computer engineering it’s all about making parts for computers like new processors to make it go faster and stuff like that. There is also a field where you can design the electrical schematics for buildings so you could lay out exactly how far away the vents need to be from each other to cool the whole room without too much overlap. It would also deal with how many power outlets are needed and how to space them around the room. Electrical engineers usually just design new electronic and micro chips…I want to go into this field because I was in battle bots and my favorite part about the robot was making it run, all the electrical stuff, so I figured why not a job that I would love to do and make things work.”

“I like everything” Callie responded when she was asked about going PSEO. “Having freedom to go to lunch and hang out with friends while getting my class's done”.
Callie enjoys working at GAP and a number of other things, “I have hobbies I work a lot and I have so much fun. I work at GAP and I work with a ton of people my age or with their maturity around the age of a teenager. I also like to swim. We used to have a pool, but then we moved, but I do love to swim and be in water. I also like to write poetry I have a ton of poems on Facebook and its so much fun to express myself freely.” Working at GAP gives her a lot of opportunities because she now has more money “As a teenager if you have a job the money is fun. Save it [your money] so you can do fun things with your friends”. An example of her work is;

“Do you Know?
Do you know how much I miss you?
Do you know how long I’ve waited,
To hear your voice say my name once again,
Do you know how much I care?
Do you know how much it meant,
When you played my guitar and had me sing along with you?
And since you left my hearts been on fire,
I cant stop thinking about when I’ll see you next.
To give a hug to you,
Do you know how much it hurt when you didn’t call back?
Do you know the memories and heart ache you brought back,
Do you know I wish every white car was yours,
How I long to be with you.”

Callie is a Christian and a Republican. “My religious beliefs are that you need to have a relationship with Christ it doesn’t matter if you’re Lutheran or Catholic or Baptist. The strongest Christians are those that have a personal relationship with Jesus. My political views are republican I think that it is wrong for the government to tax individuals especially taxing the wealthy so those that don’t work can sail through life. I also don’t think that its right for the government to bail out people, I think that companies and people learn by failing so people need to fail so they don’t make the same mistakes again and if that means they have to file for bankruptcy so they don’t lose their house they should”.

Callie’s advice for future PSEO students is “make sure that you actually study. You may not have needed to study for tests in high school but you will for the college classes”. Her advice for people in general is “I think people should have more fun in life. You only get to live once so you should enjoy life. Hug people and do little acts of kindness”.

Head On Crash, 6 Dead.

A head-on crash occurred on Sunday, just west of Cambridge. Four young people in a car were killed and two people were killed in an SUV. The 16-year-old girl was driving the car. She had just got her license three weeks earlier. She is hospitalized at Hennepin County Medical Center in critical condition. There was an "odor of alcohol" in the car, the police are still investigating who was drinking.

Story #8

A new competition has come into the picture for learning. Online classes are becoming more and more popular. People have to juggle jobs, family, friends and school and that’s hard. Online classes makes it possible for students to get jobs done and spend time with their loved ones without missing classes or having to be somewhere at a certain time. So what makes online classes so popular and is it a better learning environment?

According to http://www.technicalvocationalschools.com/online_classroom_learning.aspx, “At first glance, online education might seem like an easy and undervalued way of obtaining your education. However, after years of testing and constant studies, online learning is gaining acceptance by the education industry as an acceptable and productive way of obtaining your education. One such study suggests that online learning is actually a more efficient and effective way for students to learn.”

Several students at Anoka-Ramsey Community College said that they liked the online classes. Kirsten Ellison said “I like being able to do the work whenever I have time.” Kirsten is taking two online classes. “I learn better when I can listen to lectures and I’m able to take notes.” Joshua Gloe said “I learn best on my own time. This is one reason I like online classes. I also learn well with visual aids rather than text, or audio.” He is taking four online classes.

Online classes aren’t always great; there are things to worry about procrastination. “I do definitely procrastinate more for my online classes, and this is one of the problems of not having assignments due to hand in on campus” says Joshua. Though that’s not the only problem. “Due to the youth of online learning, there has been little research conducted to evaluate the teaching methods or the effectiveness of student comprehension through an online-only learning environment. Some programs also offer a combination of online and classroom style teaching for the same course. This allows for the benefits of both types of learning to be realized” said the writer of the article at http://www.technicalvocationalschools.com/online_classroom_learning.aspx.

Online classes are best for people who can learn independently according to the survey. If a student needs to ask questions it may take a while for the teacher to respond. Joe Schmitz says that he learns better in the classroom because “Visual leaner...ask a lot of questions.” Joe says “A teacher that understands how to communicate very well.” It’s a two way street. For an online class the teacher needs to make things understandable and the student needs to ask

questions or make sure they understand to turn things in the assignment on time. “A teacher should teach online if they are able convey thoughts well through text, or the internet, rather than through lectures” says Joshua. “One that is clear on their expectations is able to respond to students quickly, and want their students to succeed” Kirsten said about good online teachers.

Online classes are popular but students need to be aware that they will have to keep up with their schedule and communicate with the teachers. These virtual classes are becoming the wave of the future.

Poll Story

College students need computers. A lot of the homework people turn in our typed papers or submitted digitally, especially if they are taking an online class. They need something reliable, affordable and can hold a lot of information at a time.
A poll was taken about the laptops that people have and what they like about them. The majority of the students have a laptop from Apple Inc. One person said “Apple makes amazing products, I have their Macbook Pro, and it is easy to use while also effectively powerful. It’s a great computer!” Another students said “…Mac is the only laptop I would ever buy.”
One person responded saying they had a HP computer. “The connection tray sometimes freezes up and I don’t get internet connection.”
According to Associatedcontent.com the top ten computers are (from least to greatest); Compaq, Gateway, Asus, Sony Vaio, HP, Acer, Samsung, Dell, Apple, and Toshiba coming in to take the prize. Associatedcontent.com says “Apple is a company you either love or hate, usually there is no middle ground…Apple is one of the top laptop brands on the market, though you will pay for the quality.” Toshiba is rated as the top laptop because “reliability of their laptops regardless of classification…I find they have style, features, good prices, reliability, and are recognized as a reputable brand in the consumer laptop market.”
Students need laptops or some sort of computer. Most people voted that any computers from Apple Inc. or Toshiba are going to be the most reliable for a number of things.

Enterprise story

The enterprise story that I am picking is about the Anoka-Ramsey Community College parking lots. Specifically the Coon Rapids campus. I know a number of students that have "complained" about these parking lots and how they are laid out. The people I will be interviewing will be a number of students. Some examples are Sarah Gustafson and Dolly Phillips just to name a few. I think this would make a good story because the parking lots effect pretty much everyone because they have to get to school some way or another.

Story #6

Amanda Baker teaches math at PACT Charter School, “If I didn’t know her [Amanda] I would think she was an art or music teacher,” said one of her students, “Baker is an amazing teacher. She understands what everyone is going through and she doesn’t judge where you come from.”

I asked Amanda why she wanted to be a teacher and her response was “I actually tried not to be a teacher. I wanted to live a comfortable life style and wanted to deal with math so I figured a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). I tried some classes, got bored but figured I could deal for 30 years because I would retire nicely. I then got a cube job one summer and went bonkers! I got out any time I could. In the meanwhile, I was a camp counselor and tutored on the side. I loved working with kids and teaching them new things. To watch the light bulb come on is so much fun to watch.” She chose math because “I was always good at math and enjoyed the puzzle of it. I had a lot of bad math teachers, but one really good one that inspired me to stick with it.” Amanda’s students inspirer her to keep going, “Even if things are hard they [the students] still try every day.”

PACT is mostly a Christian school so her beliefs fit right in, “I heard it put a really good way why you should choose Christianity over all else. If you are a Buddhist, you go to heaven if you have done enough good works and been a good person. If you are Muslim, you are to do good works and pray to God if you are to go to heaven. If you are Mormon you are to do good works and pray to God if you are to go to heaven... If you are Christian you go to heaven by being a good person, believing in God, and asking Jesus to be your Savior. So in all reality if you are a Christian you would go to heaven for all the other religions as well. Not just that but there is so much evidence archeologically to support Christianity. I took Old Testament Archeology in College and loved it.”

One of Amanda’s favorite quotes is something Albert Einstein said, “Life is x+y+z. X is work, Y is play, and Z is knowing when to keep your mouth shut.” And a Rene Descarte quote “Perfect men are like perfect numbers, very rare.”

Her advice is “I believe that what you think about something will happen... If you think positive, good things happen, if you think negative that will happen. I also think that things need to be reworded when you think it. EX. Don't be late. If you tend to be late instead think on time... I have never been late when I changed my wording to that. I also think that if you smile you will feel better. “

Art, Science, and Rock n’ Roll

Abigail Allan is an artist who does not really fit into any category whether it’s abstract or expressionism. She spoke Wednesday March 10th at Anoka-Ramsey Community College about her life and how it has helped create and shape her art.
Allan got her Masters of Fine Art degree at Minnesota College of Art and Design where she minored in biology and art history. When the art department found out her minor was science they were not too happy because art and science seem like polar opposites. She now teaches at Minneapolis College of Art and Design and sometime teaches at the Minnesota Science Museum.
Abigail seems to have a connection to animals and insects with deformities because she has a deformity as well. Drawing pictures of these creatures was sort of a way to let out her emotions even though she wasn’t aware of it. Allan started talking about how this one time this little girl came with her dad to one of Allan’s exhibits and the little girl had a really bad cold and was just really miserable, so when the dad saw the frogs he looked and said “look at these frogs, aren’t they cool?” and the little girl looked at him and said “no daddy, that’s sad” and that’s the reaction Allan wanted, she wants people to realize what is happening and that it’s sad.
Allan’s theory is that science fuels the ideas that turns into something personal; which people then turn into art.
People can relate to a cause or something going wrong in the environment if they have examples like sculptures or pictures of deformed species. She has many drawings and sculptures of the frogs from Minnesota that have more than the normal four legs. People react to that sort of thing because they see what is happening, especially if they have something to look at that actually looks alive or like it was once alive.
Allan decided to combine science and art because it intrigued her; she liked the gross things about life. Plus she really didn’t get modern art at all.
Abigail was explaining that the process of art and the process of science experiments are alike in a lot of ways. People have to observe what they want to draw and observe what they want to do an experiment on. Second they come up with ideas of what they want to happen with their specific art piece or what they think will happen with their science experiment. Third they actually draw/sculpt or paint the piece of art to see what happens or see how it will turn out. Same with a science experiment, scientists carry out their experiments and write down their results.
Her advice to art students or art majors is to take a lot of pictures of what they want to draw or sculpt. Make sure they are good pictures because they can forget what they want to draw or even some important detail that needs to be on there. She went through college without taking a picture and she regretted it.

Kevin Pabst

There are some interesting people who go to Anoka-Ramsey Community College, Kevin Pabst happens to be one of them.
His hobbies tend to revolve around computers. “My hobbies tend to revolve around things with screens, computers, things you plug into a television.” It isn’t a wonder why he decided to go for a CNET major. CNET stands for Computer Networking and Telecommunications. “I’m a CNET major because computers come easy to me.”
Some of the things he is passionate about is video games. He hopes that one day he’ll have a job writing about various video games. He also loves to read. “I have a passion for reading, mostly fantasy and sci-fi. My favorite series is the Sword of Truth for fantasy, and was the Ender series until I recently read Neuromancer, which I enjoy a lot more.”
Pabst future plans consist of graduating for Anoka-Ramsey Community College this spring with an Associate’s degree in Science CNET. He is hoping that the credits he has gathered from taking general classes will transfer to the University of Minnesota. He hopes to write for Game Informer but he has doubts that it will happen because it’s the biggest.
Pabst has written for BeefJack.com for less than a year. Beefjack.com is a website that has articles about arcade games and various video games.

Kidney Stones

Drinking citric acid can help with kidney stones. The citrate helps stop the form of calcium oxalate stones and reduces urine acidity. According to the National Institutes of Health if you drink citric acid three times a day it helps more than lemon juice or a diluted lemon juice. On the other hand cranberry and apple juice are good for some and bad for other types of stones.

After that she got in her car and drove to the motel down the street where she called the cops.
“I didn’t think anything, really, you know. I just reacted” says Michele. There were no witnesses and when the police got there the guy was gone. It just goes to show that even in broad daylight we need to be careful.

Anoka County Cheriff Gus DiCesari has asked the county for more equipment and personnel, The request went to the county commissioners on Thursday. At the meeting DiCesari accused the commissioners of "shortchanging" the county sheriff department to save money. Sheriff DiCesari said, "You're putting the lives of the people of this county in jeopardy." Some county commissioners seem to disagree, such as Valerie Dawkins, Faith Ellis, Jose Gardoz, Roland Grauman and the Commission President Anne Chenn. Anita Shenuski and Raymond Laybourne support the sheriff. Shenuski said, "We never had problems until we began letting migrants come to this county to work, they are a problem for law enforcement, our schools and our health care system. They take away jobs from decent people and work for next to nothing and if something gets stolen, you can bet it is one of them that's taken it. We need to protect local residents from them." Chenn disagreed completely that immigrants are the problem, she stated that they are decent people who take the jobs that local residents don't want to take. DiCesari said that he needs to replace eight older police cruisers. Chenn told DiCesari that sheriff's department would have to make do because the county did not have the additional $580,000 it would need to supply the new vehicles for the department and the five additional deputies he wants to hire. The commissioners voted 5-2 against the sheriff's request for additional money for eight new cruisers and five additional deputies.

Do's and Don'ts of leads.

The things I have learned about leads is that they need to be simple, and interesting. To make a good lead you need to write objectively, specifically and emphasize the point. The lead is the most interesting or unusual part of the first paragraph.
What breaks a lead is if you put too much time and effort on the time and the place the event/story occurred (an agenda lead). Also if you state the obvious in your lead is going to be boring and sound like every other lead about that topic.

Introduction

Hi, my name is Karina Haack. I am a PSEO student at Anoka Ramsey Community College.

Some interesting things about me are; I like to dance and write. I have been dancing for about seven years with this group called For His Name Sake. It's not ballet or tap, it's Israeli dancing and worship all mixed to form a category...sort of. I like to write short stories but most of the time I am trying to write a book or jotting down ideas for one.

I hope you enjoyed my blog.
